Eminem’s ‘The Death of Slim Shady’ Dominates Billboard 200 with Record-Breaking Rap Sales

Eminem’s latest album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce),” has stormed to the top of the Billboard 200, achieving the biggest sales week of 2024 in the Hip Hop genre.

Debuting at number one with 281,000 equivalent album units, Eminem’s 12th studio album ended Taylor Swift’s 12-week reign at the top with her album, “The Tortured Poets Department.” This impressive debut also surpasses the previous rap sales record for 2024, set by Future and Metro Boomin’s “We Don’t Trust You,” which sold 251,000 units.

“The Death of Slim Shady” also boasts the second-largest digital launch of the year with 114,000 sales, only behind Swift’s 274,000. A physical release is set for September 13.

Eminem’s latest effort marks his 11th No. 1 album, tying him with Kanye West, Bruce Springsteen, and Barbra Streisand. Only a few artists, including Drake (13), Taylor Swift (14), JAY-Z (14), and The Beatles (19), have more chart-topping albums.

The album’s opening week exceeded those of Eminem’s previous releases, surpassing “Music to be Murdered By” (279,000) in 2020 and “Revival” (267,000) in 2017.

“The Death of Slim Shady,” released on July 12, has sparked controversy due to Eminem’s diss aimed at conservative commentator Candace Owens in the track “Lucifer.” The song, produced by Dr. Dre, includes provocative lyrics targeting Owens.

Owens responded with a scathing video on her YouTube channel, accusing Eminem of being a closeted homosexual and criticizing his relevance in the music industry. “First thing I wanna say is Eminem is obviously a gay man. It’s very sad that Eminem cleaned out his closet but never came out of his closet,” she remarked, referencing his 2002 hit song. Owens continued, “His career should have ended, like, 15 years ago and he keeps going.”

Despite the controversy, “The Death of Slim Shady” continues to solidify Eminem’s legacy in the rap world, achieving significant commercial success and maintaining his position as a formidable force in the music industry.
