ESPN Returns Emmys and Takes Disciplinary Action Amidst Revelations of Decades-Long Fraud Scheme

ESPN has returned multiple Emmy statues and implemented disciplinary measures following an internal investigation that uncovered the network’s submission of fake names to the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) in pursuit of awards for ineligible on-air personalities. The fraudulent activity reportedly spans as far back as 1997, with ESPN acknowledging the wrongdoing and attributing it to a misguided attempt to recognize important members of its production team.

In a statement, an ESPN spokesperson stated, “Some members of our team were clearly wrong in submitting certain names that may go back to 1997 in Emmy categories where they were not eligible for recognition or statuettes.” The network apologized to NATAS for violating guidelines and collaborated with the organization to overhaul its submission process to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Athletic initially reported the scheme, revealing that ESPN had not only used fictitious names to secure awards but also re-engraved the statues over the years and presented them to individuals ineligible to receive them. ESPN, upon being made aware of the situation by the current leadership, conducted a thorough investigation by hiring an external law firm.

NATAS confirmed the identification of “fictitious credits” submitted by ESPN across multiple sports Emmy categories. The organization commended ESPN for taking responsibility, conducting an investigation, and committing to internal accountability and procedural changes. According to NATAS, there is no evidence that the staffers who received the awards were aware of the fraudulent submissions.

An ESPN spokesperson informed CNN that individuals found responsible for the scheme were disciplined by the network, emphasizing a commitment to transparency and corrective actions.
