Ferrari Unveils First Fully Electric Car

Luxury sports car maker Ferrari has unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the $640,000 (£474,320) “Luce.”

The new model marks a major shift for the iconic Italian brand, becoming Ferrari’s first-ever five-seater and featuring a design created in collaboration with LoveFrom, the agency founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.

Unlike Ferrari’s traditional supercars, the Luce embraces a more futuristic design language – a move that has sparked mixed reactions online. Some social media users praised the vehicle as a “masterclass in design,” while others criticised it heavily, comparing the backlash to reactions surrounding Jaguar’s recent electric rebrand.

Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said the Luce, which means “light” in Italian, took five years to develop. The company had previously resisted launching a fully electric vehicle, instead focusing on hybrid models that combine petrol and electric power.

According to Ferrari, the Luce uses Ferrari-made electric motors on each wheel and can accelerate from 0 to 60mph (96km/h) in around 2.5 seconds. The company also said all major components are produced in-house to ensure long-term servicing and protect the vehicle’s resale value.

The launch comes at a difficult time for the global EV market. Carmakers including Ford and Volkswagen have recently shifted focus back toward petrol-powered vehicles due to slowing EV demand and policy changes in the United States under President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, rivals such as Lamborghini and Porsche have scaled back their electric ambitions amid weak demand and rising competition from Chinese automakers.

Despite the criticism and broader industry slowdown, Ferrari insists it will continue offering petrol, hybrid, and electric vehicles side by side as it expands its lineup for the future.
