Florida Governor DeSantis Enacts Ban on Social Media Accounts for Minors Under 14

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis takes a decisive step towards safeguarding children from online threats by signing HB3 into law, prohibiting minors under the age of 14 from creating social media accounts. The measure, enacted on March 25, 2024, aims to shield young individuals from potential dangers posed by online predators, inappropriate content, cyberbullying, financial scams, and detrimental effects on mental health.

The proliferation of social media platforms has transformed digital interactions, with billions of users worldwide engaging on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and TikTok. However, concerns have mounted over the detrimental impact of excessive social media usage, including heightened risks of depression, cyberbullying, and exploitation among youth.

Citing alarming statistics and guidance from the U.S. Surgeon General, Governor DeSantis underscores the need for proactive measures to mitigate the adverse effects of social media on young individuals. The law prohibits minors under 14 from owning social media accounts outright, with parents empowered to make decisions regarding account ownership for children aged 14 to 15.

Moreover, the legislation mandates age verification measures for explicit websites and reinforces anonymity protections for Florida residents online. While the law addresses certain aspects of online safety, it does not encompass all potential avenues for exploitation, such as text messages, emails, or phone calls.

Governor DeSantis urges parents to educate themselves on the risks associated with social media and implement proactive strategies to safeguard their children online. Recommendations include closely monitoring online activities, setting clear usage boundaries, and empowering children to recognize and report any concerning communications to trusted adults.

As Florida takes bold steps to protect its youngest residents in the digital age, the implementation of HB3 signifies a proactive approach towards fostering a safer online environment for children.
