Ford Partners With Tesla to Give Customers Access to EV Superchargers

Ford electric vehicle owners in the United States will soon have access to Tesla’s extensive EV charging network, as announced by the CEOs of both companies, Jim Farley of Ford and Elon Musk of Tesla.

Starting from next year, Ford EV owners can utilize Tesla’s 12,000 Supercharger stations through the Ford mobile app.

The partnership between Ford and Tesla was revealed during a Twitter Spaces livestream where Musk expressed his admiration for Ford as a company and their vehicles.

Farley, in turn, praised Tesla’s support and stated that Ford’s upcoming generation of EVs would feature Tesla-style charging ports instead of the commonly used CCS chargers found in most other EVs.

To take advantage of Tesla’s Superchargers, existing Ford electric vehicles will require an adapter. This collaboration comes at a time when many US states are pushing for increased electric vehicle adoption.

Critics have highlighted the need for improved charging infrastructure to make EVs a viable option for more Americans, especially in areas with limited charging availability along highways.
The urgency has grown, leading several states like California and New York to pass bills aiming to restrict the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035.

Musk had previously extended an invitation to other EV manufacturers to utilize Tesla’s charging ports, and Ford is the first major automaker to accept the offer.

The move reflects Tesla’s prioritization of enhancing the customer experience and Ford’s commitment to providing its EV customers with greater convenience and access to charging infrastructure.

During the livestream event, Farley jokingly acknowledged the challenges of developing embedded electric architectures, highlighting the complexity involved in creating robust EV systems.

Overall, this collaboration between Ford and Tesla signifies a step forward in expanding the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and improving the EV ownership experience for Ford customers.
