GameStop Plans Mario Cosplay Record Attempt in New York

GameStop is planning a Mario-themed celebration in New York City as it attempts to break the world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as the iconic video game character Mario.

The event is scheduled for March 10, widely known among fans as Mario Day because of the “Mar 10” date format. Organisers say the goal is to surpass the existing record of 230 Mario cosplayers, set in 2010 in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, China.

The record attempt will take place at a GameStop location in New York City and will feature a full day of Mario-themed activities, including photo opportunities and prize giveaways. Participants who arrive dressed as Mario will receive a $5 bonus store credit, while the best costume on the day will earn a free Nintendo Switch 2. Attendees dressed as Luigi are welcome but will not qualify for the store credit.

According to organisers, the costume requirements are straightforward: a red shirt, blue overalls, a red hat and a moustache.

The event comes as Nintendo continues activities marking Mario’s 40th anniversary. Celebrations this year include new game releases and the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which revisits the legacy of the long-running franchise.

Fans are also awaiting news of the next major 3D Mario title. Nintendo has not released a brand-new 3D Mario game since Super Mario Odyssey, making it the longest gap between flagship releases in the series.

While speculation around the franchise’s future continues, GameStop’s record attempt offers fans a chance to celebrate the character’s legacy – and potentially walk away with a new console – by stepping into Mario’s trademark red-and-blue outfit for the day.
