GM to Lay Off Nearly 1,700 Workers at Kansas Plant, WARN Notice Reveals
General Motors (GM) is set to lay off 1,695 employees at its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas, according to a recent Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice. The company will begin implementing the layoffs in two phases starting November 18.
In the first phase, GM will temporarily lay off 686 full-time workers and terminate 250 temporary employees, as reported by Automotive News. The second phase will begin on January 12, 2024, with an additional 759 full-time workers being temporarily laid off.
These layoffs come as GM prepares to halt production of the Cadillac XT4 at the Kansas plant in January 2025, with plans to resume operations later in the year to accommodate both the Bolt EV and XT4 on the same assembly line. This transition has resulted in the temporary suspension of production workers.
In August, GM also laid off over 1,000 salaried employees across its software and service units globally. Despite multiple efforts to adapt to evolving market demands, the company continues to face workforce reductions.
GM has not yet provided further comments on the latest round of layoffs.
