Google Commits $15bn to Build World-Class AI Data Hub in India
Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., has announced plans to invest $15 billion in constructing a new artificial intelligence (AI) data hub in Visakhapatnam, a port city in Andhra Pradesh, southern India.
According to Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, the project represents Google’s largest AI hub investment outside the United States, and the funds will be deployed over the next five years. Kurian made the announcement during an event in New Delhi on Tuesday.
“This is the largest AI hub we are building anywhere in the world outside the US,” Kurian said, describing the investment as a strategic expansion of Google’s global AI network, which currently spans 12 countries.
The facility will serve as a major centre for cloud and AI innovation, combining advanced data infrastructure with renewable energy systems and an expanded fibre-optic network. It is expected to accelerate AI-driven growth and support enterprises across India’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said the initiative would strengthen India’s position in the global technology ecosystem. “This facility will bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country,” he stated.
The Andhra Pradesh government confirmed that a formal agreement to launch the project would be signed later on Tuesday. The state’s Technology Minister, Nara Lokesh, described the announcement as “a massive leap for our state’s digital future, innovation, and global standing.”
The move comes as India continues to attract major global tech investments, thanks to low data costs and a fast-growing internet user base. The government has been offering subsidised land and electricity to lure investors as part of its plan to develop 6GW of data centre capacity by 2029.
According to JLL’s India Data Centre Market Dynamics 2024 report, India’s data centre capacity surpassed 1GW in 2024, nearly tripling its 2019 level – positioning the country as one of the world’s fastest-growing data infrastructure markets.
