Google to Introduce Lock Screen Widgets for Smartphones in Android 16 Update

Google is set to bring lock screen widgets to smartphones, expanding a feature previously available only on tablets. Announced during the company’s Spotlight Week, the update will be part of Android 16 QPR1, expected to roll out in late summer 2025.

The new feature will allow users to access essential information and controls directly from the lock screen, enhancing convenience and personalization. According to Google, users will be able to check the time, set alarms, view important notifications, and manage smart home devices like lights and thermostats—all without unlocking their phones.

Google has confirmed that the lock screen widgets will be part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), ensuring availability on both smartphones and tablets. However, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will not initially be able to customize the widget interface, maintaining a uniform experience across devices. While manufacturers can pre-set default widgets, customization options will be limited at launch.

One key aspect of the rollout is the ability to customize how widgets appear, with triggers such as charging or docking status enabling automatic display. Additionally, third-party manufacturers will have the flexibility to implement posture detection features for further interactivity. In terms of layout, widgets are expected to take up approximately 4 x 3 cells on the launcher, though this may vary by device.

Google has encouraged developers to optimize their widgets for dynamic color adaptation and resizing, ensuring they meet the same quality standards as home screen widgets. The first phase of testing will be available on Pixel Tablet devices, which gained support for lock screen widgets with the Android 15 QPR2 update in December 2024.

With the full rollout expected later this year, Google’s latest update aims to enhance the smartphone experience, offering greater customization and efficiency for users.
