Grammy Awards 2024: Afrobeat is Now Part of Pop Music – Grammy CEO

In a groundbreaking move, the Grammy Awards 2024 will spotlight African music with the introduction of a dedicated category, Best African Music Performance. Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the Recording Academy, revealed to the BBC that this addition signifies the recognition of African music as an integral part of global pop music.

Expressing his excitement about the inclusion of the new category, Mason highlighted the significance of African artists on the global stage. Nominated artists for this category include Tyla, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, and Davido, showcasing the diverse talent emerging from the African music scene.

While celebrating this progress, some critics, like Grammy award-winning record producer Ian Brennan, argue that an award for African music is long overdue. Brennan emphasized the historical oversight, pointing out the absence of African artists in the Lifetime Achievement Award category.

African artists have achieved Grammy success in the past, with notable figures like Miriam Makeba and Burna Boy earning recognition. However, Mason acknowledged the Recording Academy’s historical focus on American music and admitted the need for adaptation to better represent the global music landscape.

Harvey Mason Jr., who became the first Black person to lead the Grammy Awards in 2021, has been actively working to broaden the awards’ scope and inclusivity. He affirmed that the Grammys are evolving to embrace music beyond the Western context and recognize the influence of diverse musical traditions.

The upcoming Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles promises to further celebrate Afrobeat, with Burna Boy set to make history as the first Afrobeats performer ever to take the stage. This move marks a significant step toward acknowledging and honoring the impact of African music on the world stage. The Best African Music Performance category is anticipated to contribute to a more comprehensive representation of global musical excellence at the prestigious awards.
