Gucci Forecasts 20% Sales Decline Amid Asia Slowdown

Gucci, the renowned luxury brand, anticipates a significant 20% decrease in sales for the first quarter, primarily attributed to a slowdown in Asia, as reported by its Paris-based parent company, Kering.

This projection contrasts with the resilience demonstrated by rivals such as LVMH and Hermès, whose sales have remained steadfast despite economic challenges.

While the luxury market has experienced growth over the past decade, recent years have seen a plateau in sales, particularly impacting brands heavily reliant on Asian markets. Gucci, which garners over a third of its sales from China, faces headwinds amidst the country’s economic struggles.

Kering issued a statement highlighting a notable sales decline at Gucci, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, prompting the profit warning. The company is set to disclose its financial results on April 23, shedding light on the full extent of the sales downturn.

Gucci holds significant weight within the Kering portfolio, accounting for two-thirds of the group’s operating income. Kering’s other prestigious brands include Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, and Bottega Veneta.

In contrast to Gucci’s forecast, larger competitor LVMH reported higher-than-expected sales for 2023, showcasing resilience in the luxury market. Similarly, Hermès celebrated record annual sales last year, announcing plans to reward all employees worldwide with a bonus.

Gucci, known for targeting younger, aspirational consumers, faces unique challenges amid economic uncertainties. In response, Kering appointed new leadership for Gucci, appointing Jean-François Palus as CEO and Sabato De Sarno as creative director. The recent launch of the Ancora collection in mid-February has garnered positive feedback, signaling potential for revitalization within the brand.

Despite the sales forecast, Kering remains committed to navigating challenges and fostering growth opportunities for its iconic brands, including Gucci, in the ever-evolving luxury landscape.
