Gyakie Unveils Emotional New Single ‘Sankofa’ Ahead of Debut Album Release
Ghanaian Afro-fusion singer Gyakie, born Jackline Acheampong, has released a new single titled Sankofa, setting the stage for her upcoming debut album After Midnight.
Marking her first release of the year, Sankofa is a deeply personal track that draws inspiration from the Ghanaian Adinkra symbol meaning “to return and retrieve what was lost.” The song, co-written with longtime collaborator Eyram Gbewonyo (Afrolektra), explores themes of reflection, healing, and emotional reconnection.
With its stripped-back production and raw vocal delivery, the track offers a glimpse into Gyakie’s personal experiences with grief and solitude. According to the singer, Sankofa was born out of late-night introspection and influenced by her mother’s post-midnight prayer routines – rituals that inspired the tone of her forthcoming album.
Best known for her hit Forever from the 2020 Seed EP and a 2022 collaboration with Davido on her My Diary EP, Gyakie continues to push the boundaries of Afro-fusion by blending elements of R&B and highlife into a sound that resonates with fans around the world.
The new single arrives amid rising anticipation for After Midnight, which is expected later this year. Gyakie, who is signed to RCA Records UK and Sony Music Africa, recently spoke about her evolving artistry at the 2025 Forbes Summit, hinting at a more introspective direction for the album.
“Sankofa” is now available on all major streaming platforms and has already received praise from listeners for its heartfelt message and late-night mood. The track sets a reflective tone for what promises to be one of the year’s most anticipated African music projects.
