‘I Didn’t Have Bank Account While with P-Square’ – May D
Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, known as May D, has opened up about the challenges he faced while signed to Square Records, the label run by the famed R&B duo P-Square.
Speaking on a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, May D disclosed that his living conditions during his time with the label were far from ideal, and he didn’t even have a bank account.
Recounting an incident with fellow artist Davido, May D said the now-famous singer once sought refuge at P-Square’s mansion but decided against staying due to the poor state of his room. “When Davido was running from his dad, he came to my room in P-Square’s house, and he was like, ‘May D, is this where you stay? I can’t sleep here,’” he shared. “If I had a proper room, it would have been different.”
May D further revealed that throughout his four-year tenure with the label, he didn’t have a bank account, stating, “It’s only when someone has money that they open an account.”
He also accused P-Square of sabotaging his potential deal with Akon’s Konvict Music. According to May D, when he shared Akon’s interest in signing him during a trip to the U.S. for the Chop My Money Remix video shoot, the duo allegedly intervened, preventing the deal from materializing.
May D first rose to prominence after signing with Square Records in 2011. However, by August 2012, the label officially announced that he was no longer part of their roster.
