‘I Didn’t Take Life Seriously Until I Lost My Dad’ – Rema

Nigerian music sensation, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has opened up about how the loss of his father at a young age profoundly impacted his life and mindset. Speaking on the Afrobeats podcast hosted by Shopsydoo, the ‘Calm Down’ crooner revealed that his father’s passing made him realize the significance of family and prompted a shift in his approach to life.

Rema candidly shared, “It [losing my dad] shaped me, to be honest. It shaped my mindset, my mood, you know. There was a point in time I was very colourful, I would say. I was funny, running around and unserious. I never took life seriously until when I lost my dad. And it just shows different sides of people. It just shows the importance of family as well.”

The young artist expressed the valuable lesson he learned about cherishing family connections despite the occasional disagreements among siblings. He emphasized the unpredictability of life, stating, “Yeah, as siblings we might have our fights, quarrels but you never know when you will just not see them again; the people you are closest to.”

Rema fondly recalled his father’s affectionate nickname for him, saying, “For my dad, my dad used to call me a soldier.” This playful moniker holds a deeper meaning for Rema, as it symbolizes the resilience and strength he acquired from his experiences.

As Rema continues to make waves in the music industry with his unique sound and powerful vocals, his personal journey and reflections offer a glimpse into the driving forces behind his artistry. With his story of transformation and growth, Rema’s words resonate with many who have faced life-altering events and emerged stronger, shaping his music and touching the hearts of fans worldwide.
