I Lost Movie Roles Because People Tagged Me Ugly – Funke Akindele

Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, recently shared her experiences of facing challenges and being denied major roles in the entertainment industry during her early days in the business. Akindele revealed that she often encountered such difficulties because people perceived her as “not fine” based on her appearance.

During a conversation on the latest episode of the TokeMoments podcast, hosted by media personality Toke Makinwa, Funke Akindele opened up about her journey in the film industry. She explained how her physical appearance affected her career, even in Yoruba indigenous movies.

The renowned ‘Jenifa Diary’ actress expressed gratitude to fellow actress Iyabo Ojo, who extended her support during times when filmmakers rejected her due to her looks. Akindele disclosed that she was often offered minor roles, which left her feeling disheartened.

She recollected, “I remember people telling me, ‘You are not fine. You don’t have ass. You don’t have boobs. You will not be in this film.'” These comments took a toll on her, leading to moments of emotional distress where she would cry in private.

Despite the early challenges and setbacks, Funke Akindele has since risen to become one of the most accomplished actresses and filmmakers in the Nigerian entertainment industry. Her story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring talents, highlighting the importance of perseverance and self-belief in the face of adversity.
