I Received N80m Tax Bill After Revealing My Weekly Income – Food Critic Opeyemi Famakin
Nigerian food critic Opeyemi Famakin has vowed to keep his financial matters private after receiving an N80 million tax bill following a public disclosure of his earnings.
Famakin revealed the development during a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, where he discussed his financial journey as a food critic. According to him, the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) contacted him within 48 hours of his public comments about his income.
“Two days after I mentioned my finances, LIRS sent me an email,” Famakin recounted. “They billed me N80 million. I paid it. It felt surreal, but I paid. However, I’ve learned my lesson and will never discuss my finances publicly again.”
Famakin suggested that the tax authorities acted swiftly after his comments, highlighting the risks of discussing personal finances in public. Despite the unexpected bill, he humorously acknowledged his status as a proud taxpayer.
In 2022, Famakin stirred conversations online after claiming to be the highest-earning food critic in Nigeria, reportedly making as much as N9 million in a “bad week.” His openness about his income had drawn admiration and curiosity, but the recent encounter appears to have made him more cautious.
Famakin’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the potential consequences of financial transparency, particularly in the public eye.
