Jesse Jagz Criticises Celebrities Promoting Betting and Gambling

Nigerian rapper and singer Jesse Jagz has criticised celebrities who endorse betting and gambling companies, arguing that public figures should not promote activities that contribute to gambling addiction.

The musician shared his views in a post on X, where he strongly condemned artists and entertainers who partner with gambling brands.

“We suppose to dey stone any artist promoting bets and gambling.”

Although the comment was made figuratively, it quickly sparked discussions on social media about the role celebrities play in influencing gambling habits, particularly among young Nigerians.

Nigeria is one of Africa’s largest betting markets, with estimates indicating that more than 60 million people aged between 18 and 40 actively participate in sports betting and other forms of gambling.

Industry observers have repeatedly raised concerns that endorsements by popular musicians, actors, comedians, influencers and other public figures contribute to the growing popularity of betting platforms and may encourage gambling addiction.

Over the years, several high-profile Nigerian entertainers have signed endorsement deals with both local and international betting companies, making celebrity marketing a key strategy for gambling operators in the country.

Jagz’s comments have added to the ongoing debate over whether public figures should use their influence to promote gambling services despite growing concerns about their social impact.
