Jo Malone Speaks Out as Legal Battle Over Her Name Intensifies

Renowned British perfumer Jo Malone has expressed hope that “sense will prevail” amid an ongoing legal dispute involving Estée Lauder and fashion retailer Zara over the commercial use of her name.

The case stems from a collaboration between Malone’s newer brand, Jo Loves, and Zara, which featured her name on product packaging. Estée Lauder, which acquired Jo Malone London in 1999 along with the rights to her name, has filed a lawsuit seeking damages exceeding £200,000, citing trademark infringement and breach of contract.

Reacting publicly for the first time, Malone said she was both “surprised” and “very sad” by the legal action. In a video shared online, she maintained that both Jo Loves and Zara made clear distinctions between their collaboration and Jo Malone London, stressing that the partnership had been running for years without issue.

At the centre of the dispute is the use of her name on packaging that identified her as the creator and founder of Jo Loves. Estée Lauder argues this usage violates the terms of the original agreement, which restricts her from using the “Jo Malone” name for commercial fragrance-related purposes.

Malone, however, questioned why the issue is being raised now, given that the collaboration began in 2019. She emphasised that while she sold her company, she did not give up her identity, stating, “I sold a company, I did not sell myself.”

The entrepreneur, who founded her original fragrance brand in the early 1990s before selling it for an undisclosed sum, said she remains prepared to defend her position in court if necessary. Still, she expressed a preference for a resolution that allows all parties to coexist in the same market.

Estée Lauder has maintained that Malone agreed to clear contractual limitations as part of the sale and that it is obligated to protect the brand it has built over the years.

The case highlights ongoing tensions around personal branding, ownership rights, and contractual obligations in the global beauty industry.
