Kanye West was First International Artist to Embrace Afrobeats – D’banj
Nigerian music icon D’banj has credited American rapper and music executive Kanye West as the first international artist to embrace Afrobeats, playing a pivotal role in introducing the genre to a global audience.
Speaking on the Listen podcast, the artist, popularly known as the Koko Master, recounted how West’s passion for African music led to a groundbreaking partnership. Kanye West’s interest culminated in the signing of D’banj and producer Don Jazzy to his GOOD Music record label, marking a significant milestone for Afrobeats on the world stage.
“The first time I met Kanye West in Dubai, he told me he had been learning about Afrobeats from university students,” D’banj shared. “He was genuinely interested in the sound. That curiosity is what led to the deal for Don Jazzy and me to join GOOD Music. Kanye didn’t just buy into Afrobeats; he elevated it.”
Kanye West’s influence on Afrobeats’ rise was further solidified when he made a cameo in the music video for D’banj’s 2012 global hit, Oliver Twist. The track, which blends Afrobeats with international pop elements, became a major success, cementing D’banj’s status as a global ambassador for the genre.
D’banj’s comments highlight Kanye West’s early recognition of Afrobeats’ potential, years before the genre became a dominant force in global music, with artists like Burna Boy and Wizkid now headlining international stages.
