Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent

Kendrick Lamar Recalls 50 Cent ‘Blowing Him Away’ With Insightful ‘Jewel’

Kendrick Lamar recently opened up about his admiration for 50 Cent in a candid interview with Nigerian singer Tems for Interview Magazine, shedding light on a valuable perspective-changing moment.

Reflecting on the early stages of his career, Kendrick shared that he diligently studied the music and interviews of 50 Cent, the G-Unit icon. He highlighted a particular “jewel” that 50 Cent once dropped in an interview, a statement that continues to resonate with him.

Kendrick recounted 50 Cent’s response when asked if he considered himself a conscious artist. He quoted the rapper, saying, “Yeah, I’m a conscious artist because I have a conscience.” Kendrick described how this revelation profoundly impacted him, offering a new lens through which to view artists and their work.

“That shit blew me away. It gave me a different perspective — 50 drops a lot of jewels that give me perspective, but that one right there gave me a sense of, okay, a lot of artists live and know how to project duality,” Kendrick remarked.

He went on to express his appreciation for 50 Cent’s ability to convey duality and complexity in his art, a skill that resonated deeply with Kendrick. He stated, “That’s the true gift because that’s what life is about in its wholeness. When I seen that I said, ‘I can relate to that,’ and what you’re saying is confirmation that that’s still alive. It’s really dope to hear another artist say it. Lets us know we not crazy.”

Despite having collaborated on just one track together, “We Up” in 2013, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent have shared mutual respect over the years. In 2013, 50 Cent expressed his admiration for Kendrick’s character and confidence, despite their differing artistic personas. He recognized Kendrick’s ability to exude humility even in the face of success.

Their paths have crossed multiple times, with Kendrick making a cameo appearance on 50 Cent’s STARZ show “Power” in 2018, showcasing his acting talent. Additionally, both artists graced the stage together during Dr. Dre’s historic Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show last year, alongside other legendary performers like Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, and Anderson .Paak.
