LG to Shut Down Smartphone Update Servers, Closing Final Chapter of Its Mobile Legacy

LG Electronics will officially end all software support for its smartphones on June 30, 2025, marking the final step in its exit from the mobile phone market.

The South Korean tech giant, once the world’s third-largest phone maker, bowed out of the smartphone industry in 2021 after years of slumping sales and missed opportunities. Despite ceasing production, LG continued to support existing devices with software updates – an unusual move in an industry where discontinued phone lines are often quickly abandoned.

According to a report by Android Authority, LG’s update servers, which have remained active well beyond the promised support window, will go offline at the end of June. This means no further firmware, security patches, or operating system updates will be available to LG smartphone users after that date. The company has urged remaining users to update their devices before the servers are shut down.

Also scheduled for deactivation is the LG Bridge software, a PC application that allowed users to back up their phones, transfer files, and install updates via USB. That service will also cease on June 30.

LG made its mark in the mobile industry with bold innovations and unconventional designs, from the modular LG G5 to the swivel-screen LG Wing and curved LG G Flex 2. Yet despite its creativity, the company struggled to compete with rivals like Samsung and Apple, eventually leading to its decision to exit the smartphone space.

LG originally promised three major Android updates for premium phones released from 2019 onward, such as the LG Velvet and LG Wing. Depending on the model, most users received Android 12 or 13 before updates tapered off.

With the shutdown of its final update infrastructure, LG’s departure from the smartphone world will become complete – bringing an end to a once-celebrated chapter in mobile innovation.
