Lil Wayne, Common and More Join VP Kamala Harris to Celebrate Hip Hop 50 in Washington D.C.

In a remarkable celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, renowned artists including Lil Wayne, Common, Too Short, Jeezy, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, MC Lyte, and Wale, among others, converged on the front lawn of Vice President Kamala Harris’s residence in Washington, D.C. The star-studded concert, organized in partnership with the Recording Academy’s Black Music Coalition and Live Nation Urban, paid homage to the profound influence of Hip Hop across various domains, including music, fashion, and film.

The event witnessed a diverse gathering of artists, politicians, and journalists who came together to commemorate the enduring legacy of Hip Hop. Vice President Kamala Harris, hailing from Oakland, California, shared her personal connection to Hip Hop, highlighting its significance in her life since its inception.

Common, who fully immersed himself in the day’s festivities, captured the essence of the celebration on Instagram, sharing a video montage of his experiences in the “Chocolate City.” His post encapsulated the joy and camaraderie that permeated the event, celebrating Hip Hop from sunrise to sunset.

One of the standout performances of the night was Lil Wayne’s electrifying rendition of “6 Foot 7 Foot,” which had Vice President Harris and her distinguished guests grooving to the rhythm. The event was a testament to the enduring power of Hip Hop, uniting generations and transcending boundaries.

Last month, Hip Hop’s birthplace, Yankee Stadium in The Bronx, played host to another monumental concert in honour of Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary. The star-studded lineup featured icons such as Lil Kim, Remy Ma, Trina, Fat Joe, T.I., Common, Slick Rick, Lupe Fiasco, Ghostface Killah, EPMD, A$AP Ferg, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Ice Cube, and Run-DMC, who graced the stage for what they declared would be their final performance together.

Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to perform in the Bronx, Run of Run-DMC said, “I am honoured to hit the stage in the Bronx, the birthplace of Hip Hop, and celebrate all of my heroes.” Darryl “DMC” McDaniels added, “Aug 11 is Hip Hop’s 50th birthday! So… ‘Up in the Bronx,’ where it all started, we will be celebrating this historic moment in history! I am honoured to pay tribute to the culture that allowed this little shy kid from Queens to grow up and become The Mighty King of Rock! Thank you, Hip Hop!”
