Maui Fires Death Toll Reaches 93, Governor Anticipates Further Increase

The devastating Maui fires in Hawaii have now claimed the lives of 93 individuals, as reported in a release by Maui County authorities. The official statement confirmed that out of the fatalities, two victims have been identified, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Governor Josh Green addressed the evolving crisis during a news conference on Saturday, acknowledging that the death toll is likely to rise further as the authorities continue their efforts to manage and contain the fires.

The release provided insights into the ongoing firefighting efforts, stating that crews are actively working to extinguish flare-ups in the Lahaina and Upcountry Maui fire zones. The blaze’s impact has resulted in the destruction of several structures, including three in Olinda and 16 in Kula. Meanwhile, the Pulehu/Kīhei fire was declared 100 per cent contained on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in the containment efforts.

Addressing the challenges posed by the disaster, Governor Green discussed the pressing need for housing solutions for those affected and support staff. He highlighted that at least 1,000 rooms have been secured to accommodate displaced families and personnel involved in relief efforts.

“We’ve put together a temporary housing task force which will work with our federal partners,” Governor Green explained, emphasizing the collaboration needed to address the crisis. He elaborated on the distribution of the secured rooms, stating that 500 rooms will be allocated to families directly impacted by the fires, while the remaining 500 rooms will serve as accommodation for support staff in the affected areas.

Governor Green went on to outline the comprehensive approach to long-term housing solutions. “Then coming after that, in the days that follow, we’ll have long-term rentals. Those are the short-term rentals turned long-term now,” he noted, illustrating the multifaceted strategy that aims to address housing challenges over the extended period.

The Governor assured that the state is taking significant steps to provide assistance, with funding sources ranging from charitable donations to governmental support. “All of that’s going to be covered. It’s gonna be covered by the state. Some of it’s going to be given charitably. And then finally FEMA will cover a great deal of the cost,” Governor Green affirmed, highlighting the collective effort required to alleviate the hardships faced by those affected by the Maui fires.
