Meta Fires Staff for Buying Toothpaste, Not Lunch

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has reportedly dismissed several employees for violating its meal voucher policy. Workers allegedly used the vouchers, intended for meals, to purchase non-food items such as toothpaste and washing powder, according to sources who claim to be current or former Meta employees.

The company provides staff with meal credits of $25 for lunch, $20 for breakfast, and $25 for dinner, which are meant to be used via Grubhub, the food delivery platform. However, some employees were said to have misused the vouchers by purchasing personal care items and sharing the credits with others, prompting Meta to take action.

Posts on the anonymous work-related platform Blind corroborated the allegations, with one user claiming that more than 30 workers were fired last week for violating the policy. The dismissed employees were reportedly warned to stop misusing the vouchers, but some were still terminated months later despite compliance.

There are conflicting accounts about whether warnings were issued to staff, with some suggesting that no formal notice was given before the firings.

In addition to these incidents, Meta has been making broader job cuts across its business. This includes layoffs at its subsidiaries WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs, which is responsible for the Oculus virtual reality headset. These layoffs are said to be unrelated to the voucher policy violations.

Among those impacted by the layoffs was Jane Manchun Wong, a former security engineer at Meta and a Forbes 30 under 30 honoree. Wong revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that her position had been eliminated as part of the company’s restructuring efforts.

Meta has confirmed some changes within its teams, with a spokesperson stating that the company is adjusting resources to align with its long-term strategic goals. The spokesperson also noted that Meta is working to provide alternative opportunities for employees affected by the job cuts.
