Meta is Lifting Restrictions on Trump’s Accounts
Meta announced on Friday that it would lift the restrictions on former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in anticipation of the upcoming Republican National Convention. The decision ensures Trump, the leading Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election, will have equal social media access alongside Democrat President Joe Biden.
“In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for President on the same basis,” Meta stated. “As a result, former President Trump, as the nominee of the Republican Party, will no longer be subject to the heightened suspension penalties.”
Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram were reinstated in early 2023 following a two-year suspension imposed after the January 6, 2021, insurrection. At the time, Meta imposed additional restrictions to prevent further violations.
“If Mr. Trump posts further violating content, the content will be removed, and he will be suspended for between one month and two years, depending on the severity of the violation,” Meta outlined in a January 2023 blog post.
On Friday, Meta confirmed that these penalties have not been necessary.
In response to his suspension from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (now X), Trump launched his own social media platform, Truth Social, in 2022.
