Microsoft Paint with Co-creator feature

Microsoft Added AI to Software it Has Barely Touched Since 1985 – The results are astonishing

Microsoft has breathed new life into its classic Paint application by adding cutting-edge AI tools as part of the latest Windows 11 update. Originally launched in 1985, Paint has remained one of Microsoft’s simplest and most enduring programs, yet it’s now equipped with powerful AI capabilities that allow users to create advanced visuals with ease.

The new features include “generative fill,” which lets users enhance their images by typing prompts that instruct AI to add specific elements to their artwork. Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI has also enabled Paint to incorporate Image Creator, an AI-driven feature based on DALL-E that generates images from text prompts. These upgrades will initially be available to Windows Insider program members, with further rollout planned.

This update to Paint, part of Microsoft’s broader AI strategy, is aimed at helping users complete creative tasks quickly and effectively, even if they lack advanced artistic skills. Dave Grochocki, a Microsoft product manager, shared in a recent blog post that the new tools are intended to empower users to create visually compelling content directly in Paint — a program that has become a nostalgic staple of the digital age.

Additional AI-driven features are also coming to other Microsoft programs. In Notepad, users can now leverage AI tools to rewrite or adjust the tone of their text. These enhancements mark Microsoft’s latest efforts to keep pace in the competitive AI landscape, following the October release of its improved Copilot assistant.

The addition of AI to Paint taps into the growing interest in AI-generated art, a trend that began with tools like DALL-E in 2021 and has since spread to numerous applications across tech platforms. Even social media giants like Meta are exploring new AI-driven content, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently discussing plans to increase AI-generated content on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

As Microsoft continues to enhance its traditional applications with AI, it reinforces the company’s commitment to bringing advanced technology to everyday users. Paint’s transformation is not just a nod to the past but a step toward a more accessible creative future.
