Microsoft and OpenAI Unveil Plans for $100 Billion “Stargate” AI Supercomputer

In a move signalling the intensifying AI competition among tech giants, Microsoft and OpenAI are collaborating on a monumental project: the construction of a colossal AI supercomputer facility dubbed “Stargate.” The endeavour, estimated to cost a staggering $100 billion, aims to propel advancements in artificial intelligence technology.

According to reports from The Information, Microsoft and OpenAI are in the initial stages of planning for the ambitious Stargate data centre. The facility, slated to be based in the United States, is envisioned as the flagship among five AI installations planned by the partners over the next six years.

Projected to house millions of state-of-the-art AI chips, Stargate represents a significant leap in computational capability. If development proceeds as scheduled, the facility is expected to become operational by 2028.

While specifics of the project are subject to refinement, Microsoft is anticipated to shoulder the majority of the funding for Stargate, potentially marking a pivotal investment in AI infrastructure. The partners are evaluating chip suppliers, with considerations including industry leaders like Nvidia and AMD. Microsoft is also exploring the possibility of self-supplying Stargate’s hardware requirements.

The design and construction of Stargate present formidable challenges, necessitating innovations such as denser server racks and advanced cooling solutions to accommodate the immense computational demands and thermal output.

The collaboration between Microsoft and OpenAI, which commenced in 2019, has already yielded significant advancements in AI technology. The partners have jointly developed multiple AI supercomputer systems, including the ongoing “Phase 3” installation.

In parallel with the Stargate project, Microsoft has greenlit a $1 billion expansion of its data centre in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, slated to evolve into a $10 billion “Phase 4” system by 2026. OpenAI is also poised to unveil an upgraded AI model in early 2025.

However, the ambitious scale of Stargate and other proposed AI initiatives underscores the burgeoning competition in the AI landscape, prompting increased regulatory scrutiny over antitrust concerns in key markets.

As the race for AI supremacy accelerates, the emergence of projects like Stargate underscores the pivotal role of strategic investments in shaping the future of technology and innovation.
