Microsoft to Invest $80 Billion in AI-Driven Data Centers in 2025
Microsoft has announced plans to allocate $80 billion in fiscal 2025 to expand its data centre network and bolster artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The investment is aimed at supporting AI model training and the deployment of AI-driven and cloud-based applications, according to a company blog post on Friday.
The move underscores the growing demand for AI infrastructure as businesses across industries integrate AI into their operations. Since OpenAI’s ChatGPT debut in 2022, the race to develop and enhance AI technologies has accelerated, requiring substantial computing power from specialized data centres.
Scaling AI Infrastructure
Microsoft’s capital expenditure for the first quarter of fiscal 2025 increased by 5.3%, reaching $20 billion. Analysts project that the company’s total spending for the year, including capital leases, will reach $84.24 billion, according to data from Visible Alpha.
As OpenAI’s key financial supporter, Microsoft has emerged as a leader in the AI race. Its exclusive partnership with the AI pioneer places it at the forefront of Big Tech’s efforts to capitalize on advancements in artificial intelligence.
U.S. Focused Investment
Vice Chair and President Brad Smith revealed that more than half of the $80 billion investment would be concentrated in the United States. In the blog post, Smith credited the nation’s leadership in the AI sector to the innovative efforts of American companies and private capital investment.
“Today, the United States leads the global AI race thanks to the investment of private capital and innovations by American companies of all sizes, from dynamic start-ups to well-established enterprises,” Smith said.
