Microsoft to Retire Remote Desktop App, Shifts Users to Windows App
Microsoft has announced plans to discontinue its Remote Desktop app for Windows, urging users to switch to the Windows App for remote access needs.
According to Microsoft, support for the Remote Desktop app will officially end on May 27, 2025, and it will no longer be available for download or installation from the Microsoft Store.
Windows App Takes Over Remote Access
The Windows App, introduced in September 2024, is designed as a centralized platform for remote connectivity, integrating services like Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box. Microsoft has been gradually migrating users to this new platform to streamline remote access across PCs and mobile devices.
While the Windows App serves as a replacement, users of Remote Desktop Connection and RemoteApp and Desktop Connection may need to continue using their existing tools until full integration is available.
Transition Guidelines for Users
- General users: Must switch to the Windows App before May 27, 2025.
- Remote Desktop Connection users: Should continue using it until Microsoft completes the transition.
- Remote Desktop Services users: Should rely on RemoteApp and Desktop Connection until those features become available in the Windows App.
Microsoft’s decision to phase out Remote Desktop aligns with its broader strategy to consolidate remote access tools under a single, modernized platform. Users are encouraged to begin transitioning to the Windows App to avoid disruptions.
