Nigerian Filmmaker Priye Diri Selected for Prestigious Global Media Makers LA Residency
Nigerian filmmaker Priye Diri has been chosen as one of the 20 participants from 12 countries for the 10th edition of the prestigious Global Media Makers LA Residency, marking a historic moment as she becomes the first Nigerian to be part of this esteemed program.
The residency, organized by Film Independent and supported by the U.S. Department of State, aims to bridge international filmmakers with the American entertainment industry. The program’s mission is to foster a global network that supports independent storytelling, promotes creative economic growth, and upholds artistic freedom.
Priye will spend five intensive weeks in Los Angeles, where she will develop her narrative feature, “Baby Girl,” alongside fellow residents. The program offers a comprehensive curriculum covering screenwriting, directing, creative development, and documentary filmmaking. Additionally, participants will benefit from cultural engagement sessions, masterclasses, and industry meetings, enriching their experience and skills.
“Baby Girl” delves into the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship and a woman’s journey of self-discovery. Priye’s selection from over 650 applicants underscores her exceptional talent and the captivating nature of her story.
The residency brings together a diverse group of filmmakers from countries including Bangladesh, India, and Mexico. This diversity fosters lasting collaborations with experienced mentors and fellow filmmakers, furthering the program’s mission to build a vibrant international community of independent filmmakers.
Priye Diri is a recognized talent in the industry, with writing credits on the Amazon Prime hit “Kill Boro” and directing credits on Showmax’s “Rule No. 1,” Iroko TV’s “Chimera,” and her upcoming short film “Dying Is Hard To Do.” Her selection for the Global Media Makers LA Residency highlights her growing influence and the global appeal of her work.
