Nigerian Icon Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away at 72
Nigerian music legend, actress, and politician Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72. The acclaimed artist reportedly collapsed during a performance at Stella Okoli’s birthday party in Lagos on Tuesday. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Muhammed Ahlim, spokesperson for the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN), confirmed the news to Channels Television, stating, “Yes, it is true. But we are yet to get an official statement from the family.”
Born in Obosi, Anambra State in 1952, Onwenu began her illustrious music career in the 1980s, debuting with the album “For the Love of You” in 1981. She became renowned for hits like “One Love” and her involvement in Nollywood, earning numerous accolades for her contributions to both music and film. As a pioneer in Nigerian entertainment, Onwenu was honored with the National Honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
Beyond entertainment, Onwenu was also active in politics. She served as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and later as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.
Prominent figures, including former Kaduna Senator Shehu Sani and ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri, have expressed their sorrow at her passing. Sani described Onwenu as a “timeless legend” whose music spread messages of love and peace, while Omokri praised her as an “elegant stallion” who elevated music and artistry.
Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki also mourned her loss, describing Onwenu as “one of Nigeria’s most versatile music exports” and a “gift to her generation.” He lauded her multifaceted career and her contributions as a soulful singer, journalist, and social crusader, lamenting the loss of a role model for Nigerian youth.
Onyeka Onwenu leaves behind a legacy as an influential figure in Nigerian culture, whose work touched many lives and whose presence will be deeply missed.
