Niniola Reveals Why She Declined Record Label Deals
Nigerian singer Niniola has shed light on her decision to remain an independent artist despite multiple offers from record labels over the years.
Speaking in a recent interview with TVC, the Maradona hitmaker explained that her choice was influenced by a desire to retain creative freedom and control over her music.
“I have been an independent artist for 10 years. There are pros and cons of signing with a record label. I have seen the business side of doing music which a lot of people don’t see—they just focus on making music,” she said.
Niniola revealed that her debut single attracted the attention of a label, but she turned down the offer due to concerns about retaining her unique Afro-house style, which was not mainstream at the time.
“A label wanted to sign me after my debut single, but I was sceptical because I didn’t want anyone to switch my style. At that time, nobody was doing Afro-house. They can dictate what you do because they are the ones financing you,” she explained.
For the singer, the ability to control her creativity is a key benefit of being an independent artist.
Beyond her professional choices, Niniola shared a personal insight, describing herself as an introvert who becomes more extroverted through music.
Her story highlights the challenges and rewards of navigating the music industry as an independent artist, with her journey serving as an inspiration to others looking to retain artistic control in the face of industry pressures.
