Nintendo to Introduce Virtual Game Cards for Digital Game Sharing

Nintendo is set to roll out a new feature called Virtual Game Cards, allowing users to share their digitally purchased games between devices – bringing a level of flexibility previously reserved for physical copies.

The announcement came during a recent Nintendo Direct event, where the company unveiled upcoming games and remasters for the Nintendo Switch. Another Nintendo Direct, scheduled for April 2, will focus on the highly anticipated Switch 2.

How Virtual Game Cards Work

Virtual Game Cards will allow digital game transfers between consoles, making it easier for players to access their purchased titles across multiple systems. The feature works across all Switch models, including the Switch 2, which is confirmed to be backward compatible.

To transfer a game between two consoles, users will need to complete a one-time local verification via WiFi. Once transferred, the game will only be available on the receiving device, similar to how a physical game cartridge functions.

Sharing Games With Friends and Family

Beyond personal use, Nintendo Virtual Game Cards will allow game sharing within Family Groups, which can include up to eight members. However, the feature comes with several limitations:

  • Same WiFi Requirement: Both consoles must be on the same WiFi network during the initial transfer.
  • One Game at a Time: Users can loan only one game at a time to a friend or family member.
  • 14-Day Limit: Loaned games will automatically return to the owner after two weeks.
  • No Simultaneous Play: Users cannot play a game while it is loaned out.

Even for users with multiple Switch consoles, the Virtual Game Card system will prevent games from being played simultaneously across devices. For instance, if a player transfers Metroid Prime 4 from their original Switch to a Switch 2, it will no longer be accessible on the first system until it is transferred back.

When to Expect Virtual Game Cards

Nintendo’s Virtual Game Cards will be introduced via a software update for current Switch models in late April, with the Switch 2 launching with the feature pre-installed. More details, including an official release date, are expected during the April 2 Nintendo Direct event.
