Microsoft’s AI Found a New Material to Replace Li-ion Batteries

In a groundbreaking collaboration with the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Microsoft’s AI, powered by the Azure Quantum Elements cloud platform, has identified a novel material poised to transform rechargeable battery technology. The tech giant’s AI algorithms, working in tandem with PNNL, accelerated the research on materials beyond lithium, a move aimed at addressing environmental concerns associated with traditional lithium-ion batteries.

The AI, integrated with Redmond’s high-performance computing systems, facilitated the rapid prediction of material characteristics, including energy, force, stress, electronic band gap, and mechanical properties. Microsoft and PNNL’s AI models, trained with millions of data points from simulations, achieved a remarkable 1,500 times faster prediction of materials properties compared to conventional density functional theory calculations.

Commencing with 32.6 million candidate materials, the AI algorithms whittled down the selection to 500,000 predicted stable materials. After rigorous screening for functional properties, 800 potential candidates emerged, further reduced to 150 through “AI-accelerated” simulations exploring dynamic properties. Leveraging the expertise of the Quantum team and Azure Quantum Elements platform, Microsoft condensed centuries of chemistry and materials science innovation into the next 25 years.

Practical considerations, including novelty, mechanics, and element availability, played a role in identifying 18 top candidates. Collaborating with PNNL, Microsoft researchers pinpointed the final candidate: an electrolyte material utilizing approximately 70 percent less lithium than existing li-ion batteries, incorporating sodium as a substitute.

The synthesized material is set for further testing to verify its stability and efficiency. PNNL’s Chief Digital Officer, Brian Abrahamson, emphasized the global significance of developing novel batteries and highlighted the labor-intensive nature of traditional synthesis and testing processes. Microsoft envisions AI revolutionizing industries and ushering in a new era of scientific discovery.
