Odumodublvck Defends Nigerian Hip-Hop and Afrobeat Amid Criticism

Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has responded to critics who claim that Nigerian hip-hop and Afrobeat lack authenticity, asserting that the genres are uniquely Nigerian and deserve global respect.

In a recent interview, Odumodublvck argued that Nigerian artists are not merely imitating international styles but are instead creating groundbreaking music that resonates worldwide. He highlighted the innovative fusion of hip-hop and Afrobeat, which he described as “ancestral melodies” that connect deeply with audiences, particularly young women.

“Our sound is distinct. We’re not trying to be American or European rappers; we’re redefining what hip-hop and Afrobeat mean, and the proof is in the impact,” he stated.

Odumodublvck addressed detractors who dismiss Nigerian hip-hop as subpar, challenging them to replicate the creativity and originality of the music. He pointed to his own work, where he sang all the hooks for his songs, as evidence of versatility and authenticity.

“Because we sing our hooks ourselves, some people say it’s not real hip-hop. But look at the results—people are dancing and connecting in places like Atlanta and Washington, D.C. These verses have never been heard in the history of Nigerian music,” he said.

The rapper also critiqued self-proclaimed “best rappers” in Africa, suggesting that their claims often lack substance. He urged Nigerian artists to continue pushing creative boundaries and resist attempts to undermine their achievements.

“Skepta told me, ‘The fact they don’t understand it means you’re doing something good.’ That’s why we’re here to teach and encourage others to keep innovating,” he added.

Odumodublvck’s passionate defense of Nigerian music reinforces its growing global influence, highlighting the need for appreciation and recognition of its unique contributions to hip-hop and Afrobeat.
