Phyno Explains Why He Raps in Igbo
Nigerian rapper Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, popularly known as Phyno, has opened up about his decision to rap in his native Igbo dialect, citing cultural representation and uniqueness as key motivations.
During a recent appearance on the In My Opinion podcast, the Indigenous artist shared that he initially rapped in English but later transitioned to Igbo to distinguish himself on the global stage.
Phyno explained:
“Growing up, I listened to lyrical emcees like Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, 2Pac, and Biggie. I had a lot of Western influence in my music. When I started rapping, it was in English. But as I thought about building a career, I asked myself, ‘What am I going to sell to the world?’”
He added that his switch to Igbo stemmed from a strategic decision to offer something unique to international audiences:
“If I go to the UK, I can’t sell English to them—they own the language. But if I bring Igbo to America or anywhere else, it’s something they don’t have. That makes it unique. You have to sell what they don’t have.”
Phyno also highlighted how his upbringing in a highlife-influenced neighbourhood played a pivotal role in shaping his music. He now integrates Igbo culture into his art and even his appearance.
“I grew up in an environment rich in highlife music, and I make sure to incorporate those influences into my work. I’ve also started wearing traditional Igbo attire to represent my culture and stand out,” he said.
Phyno’s dedication to promoting his heritage has earned him a loyal fan base, both at home and abroad, and solidified his place as a pioneer of indigenous rap in Nigeria.
