PlayStation CEO Reaffirms Importance of Consoles Despite Evolving Gaming Habits
Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO, Hideaki Nishino, has reiterated his belief that dedicated gaming consoles remain central to the gaming experience, even as the industry continues to expand across PC, mobile, and cloud platforms.
Speaking in a recent interview with Japanese gaming publication Famitsu, Nishino stated that he still considers a game console an essential part of playing games. However, he suggested that the concept of a console is evolving and can take different forms beyond the traditional living-room setup.
According to Nishino, Sony is exploring new ways to deliver gaming experiences that fit modern lifestyles. He pointed to the success of the PlayStation Portal as an example of how gamers can access PlayStation titles outside the conventional television environment.
He explained that while PlayStation remains strongly associated with home console gaming, innovations such as the Portal demonstrate how gaming experiences can be extended to different locations and situations. He added that Sony intends to continue experimenting with technologies that create fresh ways for players to engage with games.
Nishino also addressed Sony’s approach to releasing games on PC. He said the company remains open to bringing titles to the platform when it enhances the overall gaming experience. However, he indicated that Sony’s primary focus for internally developed single-player games is to strengthen the unique value offered by the PlayStation ecosystem.
For multiplayer and live-service titles, Sony continues to support simultaneous releases across both PlayStation 5 and PC, viewing broader accessibility as important for building larger online communities.
The comments come amid ongoing debate within the gaming industry about the future of dedicated gaming hardware as cloud gaming, mobile gaming, and PC platforms continue to grow. Despite these shifts, Nishino’s remarks signal that Sony remains committed to consoles while exploring new ways to adapt its gaming experiences to changing player preferences.
