Parmod Kalia (l) and Teju Adedayo (r) are both now eligible for full compensation

Postmasters Wrongfully Convicted in Horizon Scandal to Receive Full Compensation

In a significant turn of events, a group of former sub-postmasters, whose convictions were overturned in the Horizon scandal, have been assured that they will receive full compensation. This assurance follows a period of uncertainty where they were offered substantially lower sums by the Post Office due to disputed evidence regarding the Horizon software.

The decision, heralded as a victory for justice, was announced by Post Office Minister Kevin Hollinrake, who acknowledged the necessity of ensuring equal treatment for all affected individuals. Among those impacted are Teju Adedayo and Parmod Kalia, both of whom expressed relief and gratitude for the reversal.

Ms. Adedayo described the U-turn as a significant relief but lamented that such a situation should never have arisen. Mr. Kalia echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the time-consuming and emotionally draining nature of their struggle.

The ordeal traces back to the “public interest cases,” a group comprising five sub-postmasters, including Adedayo and Kalia, whose convictions were overturned in 2021. Despite this legal victory, they were initially denied full compensation, leading to widespread outcry and accusations of injustice.

Professor Chris Hodges, chair of the Independent Horizon Compensation Advisory Board, hailed the decision as the resolution of “unfinished business,” emphasizing the importance of equitable treatment for all victims.

Both Adedayo and Kalia endured years of suffering and personal turmoil, stemming from wrongful convictions linked to discrepancies in the Horizon software. The erroneous data provided by Horizon led to hundreds of sub-postmasters being prosecuted unfairly.

Mr. Kalia, sentenced to prison in 2001, endured severe physical and mental health challenges as a result of his conviction, while Ms. Adedayo faced similar hardships, including difficulties finding employment due to her criminal record.

The compensation announcement represents a significant step towards rectifying the injustices inflicted upon those affected by the Horizon scandal. Postmasters whose convictions are overturned can opt for a fast-tracked settlement or engage in negotiations for a more comprehensive compensation package.

While Mr. Kalia remains cautiously optimistic about the future, he acknowledges the potential challenges that lie ahead. Nonetheless, for him and others in similar situations, the assurance of equitable compensation marks a crucial milestone in their quest for justice and closure.
