Rema Claims New Afrobeats Artists Are Following His Template
Nigerian music sensation, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has stated that the new wave of Afrobeats artists emerging since 2019 are building on the foundation he created.
In a recent interview on The Breakfast Club, the ‘Ozeba’ hitmaker claimed to have set a unique template for upcoming artists, particularly through the popularization of launching careers with an extended play (EP).
“When I came into the game, I brought a template. The way new artists come and dominate, mine was different. I started the EP trend. Every new Afrobeats artist since 2019 has walked that path, popping out with an EP,” Rema asserted.
Acknowledging that some may disagree with his bold statement, the artist emphasized that he often feels the need to highlight his contributions to Afrobeats since others may be reluctant to give him credit.
“A lot of people would argue [about my impact]. I don’t like to feel like an Afrobeats Messiah. Sometimes, people don’t like young people applauding themselves,” he added.
Rema concluded by saying that while he usually waits for the industry veterans to acknowledge his influence, he is unafraid to recognize his own achievements when necessary.
Rema, known for pushing the boundaries of Afrobeats, has become one of Nigeria’s most influential musicians since his breakout in 2019.
