Rema’s Triumphant Homecoming: Afrobeats Sensation Returns to Benin City After Six-Year Absence

Celebrated Afrobeats artist Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, embarked on a momentous journey back to his hometown of Benin City after an absence of six years, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.

The eagerly awaited homecoming, captured in a viral video circulating online on Thursday, March 28, 2024, showcased Rema’s emotional return to the ancient city where his musical journey first began.

Accompanied by fellow indigenous entertainers, including Shallipopi and Davido’s aide, Israel DMW, Rema’s arrival at the airport was met with an exuberant welcome from a cultural dance troupe, symbolizing the warmth and rich heritage of Benin City.

The journey back to Benin City holds deep significance for Rema, whose rapid ascent in the music industry commenced with his breakout single “Dumebi” in 2019. Prior to this, he had already secured a record deal with Jonzing World, founded by D’Prince, and later joined forces with Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records.

Rema’s international breakthrough came with his 2022 hit single “Calm Down,” featuring a remix with American pop sensation Selena Gomez. The track achieved remarkable success, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and dominating the US Afrobeats Songs chart for an unprecedented 58 weeks.

Having relocated to Lagos in pursuit of his musical dreams in 2019, Rema’s return to Benin City signifies a poignant moment of reconnection with his roots and a celebration of his journey from local talent to global acclaim.
