Seun Kuti Criticizes Celebrities, Feminists for Silence on Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Harassment Allegation
Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has criticized Nigerian celebrities and feminists for failing to support Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in her ongoing sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, recently alleged in a televised interview that Akpabio refused to acknowledge her motion on the Ajaokuta Steel Complex because she rejected his sexual advances. Since making the claim, she has faced widespread backlash, including from female colleagues in the Senate.
Seun Kuti Declares Support for Natasha
Reacting to the controversy, Seun Kuti, during an Instagram Live session, openly backed Akpoti-Uduaghan and condemned what he described as selective activism among public figures.
“I stand with the senator 100 percent. She isn’t even the first to make such allegations against the Senate President. It’s appalling that so-called women activists are silent.”
He also criticized celebrities for being vocal about entertainment scandals while ignoring serious political issues.
“They have plenty to say about Burna Boy and Sophia Egbueje’s issue but avoid important matters like this. Look at how they all spoke up in defense of Annie Idibia during her issue with 2Face, but now they are quiet.”
Celebrities Benefiting from Government?
Kuti went further to accuse Nollywood actors and actresses of staying silent because they benefit financially from the government.
“Many of them receive fraudulent grants from the government, so they won’t speak on this. They will only defend causes that don’t threaten their interests.”
While stating that he cannot openly protest, the musician called on Nigerian women to stand behind Akpoti-Uduaghan and demand justice.
