Seun Kuti Questions Fellow Musicians’ Sources of Wealth: “I’m Building My First House After 20 Years”

Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has raised questions about the rapid accumulation of wealth by some of his colleagues in the Nigerian music industry, casting doubt on whether their riches come solely from music.

During a recent Instagram Live session, Kuti expressed scepticism over how some musicians, despite having only a few hit songs, manage to afford luxury cars and other high-end assets. He contrasted this with his own experience, revealing that after more than two decades of touring, he is just now building his first home.

“I have been touring for over 20 years, and I’m only just building my first house. Where is the music money coming from?” Kuti asked. “Musicians with less than two songs are already buying Lamborghinis and G-Wagons. Where’s this music money coming from?”

His comments come at a time when several Nigerian artists have publicly celebrated the financial rewards of the music industry. Rapper Shallipopi recently shared in an interview that his financial success came after releasing just a few hit songs, while singer Portable once claimed that there’s more money in music than in rituals, fraud, or even football.

Seun Kuti’s remarks have sparked discussions among fans and fellow musicians, with some backing his scepticism and others pointing to the evolving landscape of the global music scene.
