Seun Kuti Sparks Debate Over Nigeria’s “Yahoo Culture”

Renowned musician Seun Kuti has ignited a heated discussion online with his recent remarks shedding light on the “Yahoo boys” phenomenon in Nigeria.

The term “Yahoo boys” refers to individuals engaged in online scams targeting individuals abroad. In a video that has since gone viral, Kuti expressed his perspective that merely arresting these scammers would fail to address the root causes of Nigeria’s societal challenges.

“If they arrest every single yahoo boy in Nigeria today, nothing go change,” Kuti asserted. He suggested that these scams are symptomatic of deeper systemic issues, such as limited opportunities or economic hardship. Additionally, Kuti questioned the lack of attention directed towards corrupt officials responsible for siphoning off billions of dollars from the country’s oil revenue.

Kuti’s outspoken stance on social issues is not new. As the son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, Seun has utilized his platform for years to advocate for social justice and awareness of Nigeria’s pressing concerns.
