Tems Opens Up On Past Toxic Relationship Experience

Nigerian singer Tems has shared personal insights into a past relationship she described as toxic, revealing that her former partner exhibited obsessive and possessive behaviour.

Speaking during an interview with Angie Martinez, the award-winning artiste said the experience challenged her understanding of love, noting that what she initially perceived as affection was, in reality, controlling behaviour.

Tems explained that she believes healthy relationships should be built on mutual partnership rather than ownership, stressing that love should not involve dominance or control.

According to her, toxic relationships can be emotionally draining, particularly when one partner is unaware of their harmful behaviour. She added that such dynamics often blur the line between genuine love and possessiveness.

The singer emphasised that true love allows both individuals to exist freely while supporting each other, rather than attempting to control or “own” one another.

Her remarks contribute to ongoing conversations about emotional health and relationship dynamics, particularly among young people navigating modern relationships.
