Tems Wins Second Grammy, Triumphs Over Yemi Alade and Burna Boy

Nigerian music star Tems secured her second Grammy Award on Sunday, winning Best African Music Performance for her hit song Love Me Jeje. She edged out strong contenders, including Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, and Wizkid, to claim the award at the 2025 ceremony in Los Angeles.

Taking the stage for her acceptance speech, an emotional Tems admitted her excitement. “Wow, dear God, thank you so much for putting me on this stage,” she said, adding a special tribute to her mother, who was in attendance. “Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday, and this is her first Grammys. I just want to thank you, Mum, because she has done a lot for me and my brother.”

The win marks a significant achievement for Tems, making her the first Nigerian artist to win two Grammys. She previously won Best Melodic Rap Performance in 2023 for her feature on Future’s Wait For U.

Love Me Jeje has been a major success, drawing inspiration from Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 Nigerian classic of the same name. The song has garnered 125 million streams on Spotify and 21 million views on YouTube, solidifying its global appeal.

President Bola Tinubu joined in congratulating the singer, praising her for making Nigeria proud on the world stage.

This year’s Best African Music Performance category stirred some controversy after US R&B star Chris Brown was nominated for Sensational, a track with Afrobeats influences featuring Nigerian artists Davido and Lojay. Despite the debate, Tems’ victory further cements her place as a leading force in African music.

In addition to her Grammy win, she was also nominated for Best Global Music Album (Born in the Wild) and Best R&B Song (Burning), bringing her total career Grammy nominations to eight.

Since breaking out with Mr Rebel in 2018 and gaining widespread recognition with Try Me in 2019, Tems has continued her rise in the music industry. Her feature on Wizkid’s Essence further propelled her international career, leading to accolades including BET Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and a Soul Train Music Award.

With her latest Grammy win, Tems reaffirms her status as one of Africa’s most influential contemporary artists.
