Tiwa Savage Explains Why She Rejects ‘Queen of Afrobeats’ Title
Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has revealed why she does not embrace the popular title of “Queen of Afrobeats” often associated with her by fans and the media.
Speaking in a recent interview with Apple Music’s Ebro, the award-winning singer said that while she is grateful for the love and recognition, she finds the title uncomfortable as it places extra pressure and responsibility on her.
“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are queens,” Savage said. “Personally, I don’t like that tag. It’s uncomfortable because I feel like if I start accepting it, I need to be humble and, secondly, it doesn’t make sense to me. So, I don’t accept it – but I appreciate it.”
The Somebody’s Son crooner explained that the label likely stems from her role as one of the first Nigerian female artists to achieve a major breakthrough on the global stage. However, she stressed that the Afrobeats genre is filled with talented women who equally deserve recognition.
“I think it’s just because I was one of the first female artists in Nigeria to break through. I do appreciate that, and I’m not taking it for granted,” she added.
Tiwa Savage, who has been instrumental in pushing Afrobeats to international audiences, continues to champion collaboration and unity among female artists in the industry.
