Toy Maker Recalls 7.5 Million Baby Shark Children’s Toys Due to a Risk of Impalement

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of 7.5 million Baby Shark bath toys following reports of injured children.

Zuru LLC, the California-based company that imports these products from China, is recalling 6.5 million full-size Robo Alive Junior Baby Shark Sing Swim Bath Toys and 1 million mini-size Robo Alive Junior Mini Baby Shark Swimming Bath Toys.

According to the commission’s news release, Zuru is aware of 12 reports where children suffered impalement injuries, lacerations, and puncture wounds after falling or sitting on the full-size Baby Shark bath toy. The injuries affected the children’s genital, anorectal, and facial areas, with nine of them requiring stitches or medical attention.

No injuries have been reported thus far related to the recalled Mini Baby Shark bath toys.
The release emphasized that while using these bath toys, particularly in bathtubs or wading pools, a child can slip, fall, or sit on the hard plastic top fin of the shark, leading to potential injuries.

The CPSC advises consumers who purchased these toys to immediately stop using them and contact Zuru for a full refund.

The affected toys were sold at various retailers, including Target, Walgreens, Ross, and Walmart.
The full-size recalled toys were sold between May 2019 and March 2023, while the mini toys were sold from July 2020 to June 2023.
