UK Medical Tribunal Clears Olufunmilayo Ogunsanya, Popular Nigerian Doctor, of Sexual Misconduct Allegations
The United Kingdom Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) has cleared Nigerian-born medical doctor and social media influencer, Olufunmilayo Ogunsanya, of rape and abusive relationship allegations raised against him by his ex-girlfriend, Bola Aseyan, in 2020.
In a verdict delivered on July 19, 2023, the MPTS stated that multiple layers of investigation failed to establish any wrongdoing on the part of Dr Ogunsanya. As a result, the panel ruled that his professional record and ability to continue practising medicine in the UK have not been impaired.
The tribunal carefully examined over 20 claims brought against Dr Ogunsanya by Dr Aseyan, also a medical doctor. However, no evidence was found to substantiate any of the allegations after several sittings and adjournments.
The allegations first emerged on social media in 2020 when Dr Aseyan accused Dr Ogunsanya of rape, domestic abuse, and mental torture. While he admitted to having a relationship with Dr Aseyan, Dr Ogunsanya strongly denied the rape and abusive charges, presenting evidence to support his claims.
The UK police conducted an investigation and found no evidence of wrongdoing by Dr Ogunsanya. The case was also referred to the General Medical Council before reaching the MPTS.
Following the allegations, Dr Aseyan deleted her Twitter account and withdrew from social media altogether. She subsequently left the UK and returned to Nigeria, where she had been working in various hospitals.
In response to the tribunal’s decision, Dr. Ogunsanya’s lawyer in Nigeria, Inibehe Effiong, emphasized that his client was doing well, and Dr Aseyan would face the consequences of her uncorroborated and defamatory allegations.
Mr Effiong revealed that Bolanle Aseyan is currently facing both civil and criminal lawsuits in Nigeria for her actions, as false rape allegations should never be trivialized and are considered evil and despicable.
