UNILAG Power Cut Over N1 Billion Unpaid Electricity Debt, Says Eko Disco

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko Disco) has disconnected the University of Lagos (UNILAG) from the power grid due to an outstanding debt of over N1 billion in unpaid electricity bills. This action has plunged the institution into darkness for several days.

In a statement released on Thursday by the company’s spokesperson, Babatunde Lasaki, Eko Disco clarified that UNILAG had only made a partial payment of N180 million towards the total debt of N1.035 billion. The company emphasized that this payment represented a “small fraction” of the substantial amount still owed.

The disconnection occurred on Tuesday after repeated warnings and notices issued to the university’s management went unheeded. The prolonged blackout has significantly impacted operations at one of Nigeria’s premier universities, drawing attention to the financial challenges faced by the institution.
