‘Up NEPA!’: New Documentary Explores Nigeria’s Ongoing Power Struggles

In the drive to advance Nigeria’s development, the chronic issue of inconsistent electricity supply remains a significant obstacle. A new documentary, “Up NEPA!”, delves into this pervasive problem, capturing the frustrations and hopes of Nigerians who grapple daily with power outages.

Since its inception in 1972, the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) has been at the forefront of efforts to address Nigeria’s electricity challenges. However, the phrase “Up NEPA!”, once intended to symbolize a solution, has become a reflection of the enduring struggle with erratic power supply, spanning over five decades.

“Up NEPA!” serves as a compelling exploration of Nigeria’s electricity woes, asking critical questions about the nation’s ongoing battle with power supply and seeking potential pathways to improvement. The documentary underscores the vital role electricity plays in the well-being, productivity, and daily lives of Nigerians—from the inability to charge a phone or enjoy a cold drink to the operational needs of businesses.

The film examines alternative power sources, such as generators, and their associated issues, including air and noise pollution. As noted in the documentary, “The cost of darkness is infinite,” highlights the profound impact of electricity shortages on productivity and quality of life.

“Up NEPA!” features interviews with industry experts like Patrick Okigbo, Ernest Mupwaya, Bart Nnaji, Alex Okoh, and Rahila Thomas, who provide insights into the root causes of Nigeria’s unreliable power supply. Additionally, the documentary includes voices of everyday Nigerians, such as cold store owners in Ibadan, plastics manufacturers in Aba and Kano, and healthcare workers in Lagos, illustrating the widespread impact of power outages.

Prominent figures like actress Kate Henshaw and rapper MI Abaga also contribute to the film, which offers a comprehensive look at the historical shifts, governmental reforms, and future prospects of Nigeria’s power sector.

The key creative minds behind “Up NEPA!” include writer and director Ishaya Bako, executive producer Ummi A. Yakubu, producers Nenrot Goyoi Akinrowo and Ajifa Atuluku, and editor Steve Terungwa Lordye, all collaborating with Griot Studios. This multimedia company is dedicated to producing content with significant socio-cultural relevance.

Journalists and the public are encouraged to engage with the “Up NEPA!” documentary through media contacts, its official website, and various digital platforms.
